This oil on canvas shows an interior at Kettle's Yard house and gallery in Cambridge. The house itself was once the private home of JS Ede and was gifted by him to the University of Cambridge as a museum of twentieth century painting and sculpture. Ede acquired or received as gifts major works by Henri Gaudier-Breszka, Brancusi, Ben Nicholson, Lucie Rie, Ivon Hitchens and Alfred Wallace, among several other artists. Today the house and collection are displayed exactly as they were during Jim Ede's lifetime. Nothing has been labelled and nothing touched.

The Blue Chair shows one of several homely interiors at Kettle's Yard, in this case a winter garden which links two of the three cottages that make up the whole Museum
