In 2016, Alan Halliday was given a major exhibition in France at the Chateau de Villandry in the Loire Valley. This famous chateau is one of the biggest tourist atttractions in the Loire, and Halliday made thirty large paintings on the theme. Most were made on the spot, on large sheets of of millboard and painted in gouache.

This particular painting shows a corner of the 'Love Garden' at Villandry in late summer when the lemons are ripe. The lemon trees, some of them hundreds of years old, winter in the 'Orangery', the large structure in the background of the painting. The typical 'Versailles' planters are physically moved into the Orangerie on wheels with the advent of the autumn. Also visible are some of the topiary box-hedging and period plants which are such a major feature of these famous gardens.
