Halliday's abstract paintings are never entirely abstract. 'Abstracted' would be a better term since they all derive from an original idea seen in nature. In this particular painting, the images have been firmly drawn with the brush in black paint to suggest stems, roots, insects, leaves, pods and flowers, floating on or in front of a background of different colours which evoke areas of sky and space, glimpsed through shrubbery and undergrowth.
